“Don’t think coach knew I was from Charlotte!” Packers’ CB Jaire Alexander has an indifferent attitude over his irresponsible presence at the coin toss despite nearly messing it up
The Green Bay Packers victory over the Carolina Panthers was a rather absurd game. Despite beating the worst team in the NFL by 3 points, the Packers had their own internal disconnect get exposed for the world at large to see. The team’s cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was not one of the captains appointed by the coaching staff for the game, decided to assume the responsibility of one.
Jaire Alexander showed up to the coin toss and called Heads/Tails, a role only captains are supposed to fulfill. He ended up winning the toss and nearly cost the Packers the opportunity to get a good start by telling the referees that he wants to go on defense, thereby costing his team a chance to receive the ball at the commencement of the second half. Alexander’s justification for his actions made it worse as he sounded disrespectful and frankly, just indifferent.
The coin toss is a process to determine which team gets to kick the ball off and receive it after halftime. If done wrong, it can ruin the game strategy of a team, thereby costing them the victory. Alexander’s notion that he deserved to go out there for the coin toss because he was from Charlotte is ridiculous. Captains are chosen based off of talent, skillset, leadership ability, and experience.
As a result of his actions, the Packers have suspended him ahead of Week 17. While it may seem too harsh a move for his actions, the team is attempting to establish accountability. He blatantly disobeyed the team’s hierarchy and in order to ensure that this does not set a serious precedent, the Packers had to revert to taking some strong measures.
