LOS ANGELES — Quarterback Jadyn Davis is among eight early enrollees who joined Michigan football in California for Rose Bowl practices, and he is already leaving a positive impression with his new teammates.
J.J. McCarthy on Friday said the “sky is the limit” for the incoming sfreshman signal-caller.
“Just tremendous athlete, tremendous thrower of the football. I trained with him a couple times this past summer, and the sky is the limit for him. Just such a great leader, such a great teammate,” McCarthy said. “Just have so many good things to say about him, but I can’t wait for him to show you guys.”
McCarthy added Davis has looked “really good” during his first few practices in the winged helmet.
“The thing I’m most impressed with him, though, is just the way he carries himself,” McCarthy said. “Being around the guys and being a newcomer, he really just doesn’t say much but puts his head down and works. He’s always asking questions and always trying to grow and always trying to learn. That’s the thing I respect the most. Obviously he can throw the football very well but seeing his character and seeing his intangibles makes me excited.”
For McCarthy, who has an NFL decision to make after the College Football Playoff, welcoming Davis as the leader of the QB room is a new experience.
“Extremely, extremely cool,” he said. “I haven’t been in this position where I’ve been the starter for two years and guys are coming in, and just being able to have that relationship with such a great guy and great family. It clicked from the start.”
LOS ANGELES — Michigan center Drake Nugent missed about two weeks of practice following the Big Ten Championship Game, but the offensive lineman said he feels healthy heading into the Rose Bowl Game against Alabama.
Nugent says he sprained his ankle against Ohio State. Though he played the following week against Iowa, he then missed extended time rehabbing the injury.
“I haven’t been able to practice the past few weeks — the past 10 days I haven’t,” he said. “Right after the Iowa game, I was down a little bit.”
But as the Rose Bowl nears, Nugent said he feels “fine” and “back to normal.”
Nugent confirmed he has returned to practice and expects to play against the Crimson Tide on New Year’s Day. That’s right on schedule for the Rimington Trophy finalist, who opted to start in the Big Ten Championship Game with the knowledge he’d have a month to heal before the College Football Playoff.
