Newly-minted Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh may have left the Michigan Wolverines in a hurry, but now it’s looking like he had a succession plan in mind all along. Per Larry Lage of Upper Michigan’s Source, Harbaugh advocated for offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore to be his permanent replacement.
Moore, of course, did become athletic director Warde Manuel’s eventual pick for the prestigious gig. “Jim talked effusively about Sherrone before the season, after the season and in our conversation on Wednesday and really gave me the insight why he was our choice,” Manuel said at Moore’s introductory press conference today. While Harbaugh was suspended during the last four games of Michigan’s regular season during his signal stealing scandal, Moore served as the program’s acting head coach.
Los Angeles went 4-0 in those matchups. He’ll earn $5.5 million next season, the first of a five-year deal with LA. The payment structure includes guaranteed raises yearly, a $200K bonus should Michigan qualify for a College Football Playoff in a given year, a $500K bonus for a Big Ten conference championship, and a $1 million bonus if, like his predecessor Harbaugh before him, Moore guides the Chargers to another national title.
